Position Description:

The College for Creative Studies (CCS) seeks an innovative leader to drive the institution-wide transformation of online, blended, and technology-enhanced instruction.

Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Educational Technology and Innovation will work closely with the Deans of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies and Information Technology Services. This role focuses on developing strategies for LMS integration, launching new online programs, and refining faculty professional development in innovative teaching methods and technologies. The Assistant Dean will oversee staff supporting instructional design and professional development for CCS.

Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions:

Educational Technology and Instructional Design:

  • Oversee professional development for face-to-face, blended/hybrid, and online instruction.
  • Train faculty in the effective use of educational technology tools for classroom instruction.
  • Collaborate with the LMS technologist and the Dean of Academic Affairs to implement assessment plans in LMS (Canvas).
  • Manage relationships with external partners such as Canvas, NC-SARA, EvaluationKit, Gravity Sketch, and others supporting technology-enhanced instruction at CCS.


Professional Development and Faculty Support:

  • Supervise and collaborate with a small team of Instructional Designers and an LMS technologist on the Educational Technology and Innovation team.
  • Partner with Academic Affairs and key stakeholders to achieve short and long term goals for technology-enhanced teaching and learning across undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and continuing studies programs.
  • Collaborate and assist in facilitating professional development workshops and symposia, focusing on course design, online teaching, technology-enhanced learning, new faculty orientation and CCS professional development day.


Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Manage and maintain the annual budget.
  • Promote awareness at leadership levels of current and emerging pedagogical models and technology-enhanced delivery systems (e.g., badges, certificates, micro-credentials).
  • Collaborate with academic affairs, IT services, library, and external stakeholders on technology-driven instruction.
  • Serve as ex-officio on relevant campus committees including the Curriculum Committee, Assessment Committee, the Academic Technologies Committee, and Faculty Assembly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academic Affairs.


Qualifications and Experience:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of academic technology or educational technology experience.
  • Proven track record of innovation in teaching, online pedagogy, and a strong understanding of emerging technologies.
  • Extensive experience in instructional design for both LMS enhanced in-person learning and online learning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, patience, a sense of humor, and the ability to lead and collaborate with colleagues across the college.
  • A graduate degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with learning management systems.
  • Experience managing budgets, supervising teams, and developing program plans from vision to implementation.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical experience or understanding of enterprise systems (e.g., evaluation, assessment, curriculum management).
  • Experience working with faculty in Art and Design.
  • Experience working with Canvas LMS.
  • Proficiency in working across multiple technology platforms.
  • Experience with mobile delivery of instruction.
  • Ability to conduct, support, and interpret research.
  • Personal experience teaching and teaching or developing online courses.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places. The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required.
